The Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon is the watch version of Bugatti's new supercar, the Tourbillon. The collaboration between the two brands began in 2019, focusing on "ultimate luxury, mechanics and craftsmanship" and has resulted in a number of watches. This new tourbillon is the latest creation, featuring no fewer than 10 design elements from the new car.
Since the watch was launched almost at the same time as the car, that means Jacob & Co.'s designers and engineers must have gotten a sneak preview of the new Bugatti. In fact, founder Jacob Arabo and CEO Benjamin Arabov and their team have collaborated with Bugatti's design team, led by Achim Anscheidt and Jan Schmid. Doing so must be one of the coolest projects ever undertaken by humankind...
Bugatti logo-shaped case In simple terms, this is a tourbillon watch with built-in animation, a type of moving mechanism called an automaton. In the shape of the Bugatti logo (and the front of the car), the 52 x 44 mm black DLC titanium case from Jacon & Co. shows the innards of a V16 engine. It represents the 16 cylinders of a real Bugatti engine, but in sapphire.
Using a large block of clear sapphire, it was shaped and drilled like the engine block, including the 16 cylinder openings. These openings house the 17 titanium pistons, connected to the single-axis crankshaft. If you start the automaton, all 16 cylinders in the block (connected to the 16 exhaust manifolds) will jump up and down for 20 seconds. It's time to wind the automaton again.
On the top of the case, you'll find the car's front grille flanked by two side radiator inlets. On the bottom of the case is the shape of the car's rear, including the swirl-shaped taillights. There are two large sapphire openings on the side of the case to admire the automaton from the side.
The hands are like the car's speedometer and tachometer Looking at the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon from the front, you'll notice that it has four sapphires. On the left is a subdial showing the 30-second flying tourbillon. On the right subdial is the power reserve: red for total power, blue for automaton. The middle dial is the time, shown with two retrograde hands, like a car's speedometer and tachometer, in a 270-degree arc. The hour hand jumps instantaneously between the hours.
The Bugatti Tourbillon - we mean the car - has a cluster of instruments mounted in the center of the steering wheel that partly functions as an instrument panel. The instrument cluster on the watch looks similar. If you plan to own both the car and the watch, you might find that they have even more similarities. If you can't find all 10, give us a call and we'll help you, but only if you can take a short ride in your new car.
Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon Total Power Reserve of 48 Hours The crown at 12 o'clock is not only used for winding, but also serves as the start button for the automaton. The time can be set by pulling the bow under the dial on the back of the case. You won't feel this when you wear the watch. It goes without saying that the 557-part Jacob & Co. Calibre JCAM55, including its automaton, is of the highest quality in this masterpiece. The total power reserve is 48 hours, with which you can activate 20 animation sequences.
The Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon is presented on an interchangeable black rubber strap with shutters. The strap can be closed with a black DLC titanium folding clasp.
