MANCHESTER, England -- Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored twice to ensure Ryan Giggs spell as interim Manchester United manager began with a comfortable 4-0 victory against a mediocre Norwich side in the English Premier League on Saturday. It was an upbeat end to a turbulent week at Old Trafford that saw manager David Moyes dismissed just 10 months after succeeding Alex Ferguson, paying the price for taking the club from champions to seventh place. "Theyre all good players and all of us have let ourselves down this year," Giggs said. "We havent played to the level that were capable of this season, but we did that today." However uplifting this rout was for disgruntled fans, it came against a relegation-threatened team with the worst away record in the league. And United did also score four goals in winning two of Moyes last three domestic fixtures. Although there could be a clamour for Giggs to stay in charge after these remaining four matches of the season, United plans to appoint a more experienced, proven trophy winner. Outgoing Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is the favourite for the job. "Giggs has got all the credentials to be the next manager but thats down to the board," Rooney said. The 40-year-old Giggs has grown up at Old Tafford, from coming as a supporter, rising through the youth team, becoming the clubs most decorated player, and now occupying the managers seat in the dugout. "I was nervous, but as soon as I came out of the tunnel the reception I got, the staff got, and the players got was brilliant," Giggs said. "Ive got to thank the fans for that because its not been an easy week, but I felt 10 feet tall." Having joked on Friday he would award himself a new five-year playing contract, Giggs denied himself a 963rd United appearance. Watching from the sidelines in a club suit, Giggs ensured the team provided the cathartic experience desired by all at Old Trafford, near the end of a season of unparalleled inferiority and disorder in the Premier League era. Although there was never a mutinous atmosphere even in the lowest points of Moyes ill-fated reign, there has not been this much joy inside the ground for some time; supporters cheered loudly as Giggs emerged from the tunnel before kickoff. Fans inside the so-called Theatre of Dreams will start dreaming again of a brighter future. As if to emphasize the extent of the club moving on after Moyes, it came with Saturdays start. Marouane Fellaini, the overpriced 27.5 million pound midfield signing which defined Moyes reign, didnt even make the bench and Mata, the clubs record 37.1 million pound signing in January, was dropped from the starting lineup. Talented teenager Adnan Januzaj, who broke into the first team under Moyes, wasnt in the matchday squad. The pre-match message by Giggs to the team was: Entertain, attack, play with a tempo. But it was listless for much of the first half until Rooneys penalty kick lifted the atmosphere just before halftime. Rooney scored again within three minutes of the new half, and Matas arrival from the bench ensured the victory was even more convincing. Had United managed similar displays against the leading teams this season, Moyes might still be in a job and the team might be challenging for the title and not a Europa League spot. "We underperformed, we obviously have to take a lot of the responsibility but we have to move on," Rooney said. "We have to show we are a top team and thats what we plan to do." Kyle Walker Jersey . Riethers apparent stamp on Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj during Saturdays Premier League match at Craven Cottage was missed by the match officials. A three-man panel of former referees reviewed the incident and all agreed that it was a sending-off offence. David Beckham Jersey . The stress, the waiting, the whispers about whether he doped during his stellar cycling career, all of it ended when - after nearly two years - federal prosecutors closed an investigation of him last week without bringing any charges. Jack Butland England Jersey .A. remained bitter for Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers on the long flight back home to New York. Harry Maguire Jersey . Certainly not Monday night. George Hill took care of the early work, scoring a season-high 26 points, and Paul George closed it out by scoring 11 of his 26 points during a decisive second-half stretch that finally allowed Indiana to pull away from Minnesota 98-84 for yet another win.MOSCOW -- Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje are second after the short dance at the Rostelecom Cup figure skating Grand Prix, while Canadian teammates Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch are third in pairs. Weaver and Poje, from Waterloo, Ont., scored 61.50 points for their performance to "42nd Street," but said theyd left some marks on the table. "After we completed our program we were happy," Weaver said. "It was clean and it felt comfortable. When the score came up though we were a bit confused. But it means we have to go back and make the program even more bullet-proof." Poje said the couple will take a close took at all the programs technical elements. "We missed some technical points and we need to refine those," he said. "But we improved overall and really captured the essence of the program." Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev of Russia lead after the short dance with 68.42, while Ekaterina Riazanova and Ilian Tkachenko of Russia are third. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto are sixth. Moore-Towers, from St. Catharines, Ont., and Moscovitch, from Toronto, scored 65.65, and completed a triple twist and throw triple loop, but Moscovitch fell on a triple toe. Moscovitch took his fall in stride, saying, "I was working on some yoga positions on the landing." "I dont think we missed a jump all week in training," he added. "But we picked ourselves up and a had strong finish to the program. Weve got some ground to make up in the long and thats going to be our next challenge." Germans Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy lead with 73.25, while Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov of Russia are second. Maxim Kovtuns two confident quads, meanwhile, gave him a big lead after the mens short program. As the only competitor to try two quads, much less complete them, Kovtun ended the day nearly nine points ahead of Japans Tatsuki Machida, who opened with a clean quad but then stepped out of the triple toe loop that was the second jump in his combination. Javier Fernandez of Spain was in third despite falling on his quad. In the womens short program, Russian Julia Lipnitskaia was in the lead, followed by Carolina Kostner of Italy, thhe 2012 world champion.dddddddddddd American teammates Agnes Zawadzki and Mirai Nagasu were one-hundredth of a point apart at third and fourth, though well behind the two leaders. Kovtun is gunning for the sole Russian mens slot in Sochi, which Turin Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko also wants. Plushenko was to have been part of the Rostelecom field, but withdrew from what would have been his first top-tier competition since back surgery this spring. Plushenko blamed his withdrawal on a knee injury. "I was interested in trying my strength against such a fantastic skater," Kovtun said. "But I hope I will have another chance at Russian nationals." Kovtun was strong throughout his flamenco-themed program, the only notable flaw being he was almost sitting on the landing of his second quad to keep his balance. Machida, who won gold at Skate America, lamented that he was not in good condition in Moscow, but said its not clear whats troubling him. "Actually, I dont know," he said when asked about the specifics. Fernandez, the European champion and world bronze medallist , expressed satisfaction despite his fall. "I think I just had a little problem in the pattern and I just need to keep my mind clear," he said. All four of the top women did triple-triple combinations. But Lipnitskaia landed a more difficult triple Lutz-triple toe combo while Kostner, Zawadzki and Nagasu all did triple toe-triple toes. Lipnitskaia, who won gold at Skate Canada, will qualify for the Grand Prix final with a medal of any shade in Moscow. Kostner would qualify with a gold, but Zawadzki, after a seventh-place finish in the Cup of China, is out of contention. The top six skaters in each discipline qualify for the final, which is Dec. 5-8 in Fukuoka, Japan. Lipnitskaias program began on a mysterious note, with her crouched down and drawing figures with her finger on the ice. Asked what thats all about, she chose to keep the meaning hidden. "Everyone can see what he wants to," she said. But once she rose from the crouch, the 2012 junior world champions program was crystal-clear: a clean triple-triple, a precisely landed double Axel and a very fast combination spin at the end. ' ' '
